What an introduction to Ihlabela! Getting off the boat from São Sebastião - with an insatiable hunger - I was beginning to think that I would not survive the journey from the port all the way to Vila.

But boy was I wrong, close to losing consciousness at the bus station, my body strewn over a wet bus bench, my eyes widened as a departing bus revealed salvation - Café do Ponto.

I meekly wandered inside - the owner transferring energy into my resigned body with his radiant smile. He asked me (in fluent English - something I had not anticipated), ‘how can I help you today my friend?’

Anyway, what followed was an absolutely scrumptious meal (of which I have forgotten the name), with some of the finest picante I have had in years.

I WILL be recommending Café do Ponto to all of my friends (past, current & present).
